lockdown barrier sign

Jonathan Tilt

Independent Candidate. West Yorkshire Mayoral Election 2024.

I am pleased to endorse and support the Excluded UK campaign and in particular their full statement below. Whether elected as Mayor or not I will continue to support and platform this campaign whenever possible

I campaigned against lockdowns from their inception in the Spring of 2020. I do not believe that the state has the right to order businesses to close and to effectively quarantine a healthy population. As West Yorkshire Mayor I will do everything in my power to prevent any future lockdowns within our county.

But lockdowns did take place in 2020-22. I am self-employed and I am painfully aware of how arbitrary, irrational and punitive the business support on offer was. I know of many businesses that are still struggling to return to 2019 levels of activity. I’m aware of numerous small businesses and self-employed contractors that have been financially destroyed by the forced business closures. This must never happen again, but it is equally important that there is retrospective financial redress for those who have suffered.

Full Statement by Excluded UK

ExcludedUK is a volunteer run organisation, representing 3.8 million UK taxpayers who have been entirely or largely excluded from government Covid-19 financial support. Following the announcements of the support packages at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, it soon became apparent that large swathes of the working population would not be adequately supported, resulting in significant disparities in the support provided. Our aim is to raise awareness, lobby for change, and most importantly, our hope is that our efforts can help propel affected individuals and businesses forward in the face of adversity resulting from Covid-19 and being excluded from government support.

Despite over 4 years of campaigning, ExcludedUK members are still suffering the after-effects of being excluded during Covid-19, with businesses closing every week due to excluded owners being crippled by bounce back loans, and individuals having to declare themselves bankrupt as they just have never recovered financially. Some are also impacted by the cost-of-living crisis and increases in fuel costs, and we have daily contact with members who are not heating their houses as they are unable to afford it. We also deal with many families who are barely managing on the foodbank supplies, especially those with food allergies who might not always be catered for due to lack of donations.

Sadly we know of at least 37 who have taken their own lives and hundreds of attempted suicides. Fortunately, our amazing member welfare team has saved hundreds of lives and continues to do so every day.

ExcludedUK are asking for:

(1) An apology from the government so this injustice is recognised and assurance that it will never happen again.

(2) Parity of support

(3) Acknowledgement of loss of earnings/profit and consequential loss.
